Custom Home Renovations in Sydney

A good renovation can transform how a home works without the cost and upheaval of building new. Black Willow Group renovates homes across Sydney’s Northern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs, from period terraces and cottages to full whole-home makeovers.

We take on the renovations that need a proper builder, not just a coat of paint. Reworking layouts, opening up living spaces, restoring character homes and bringing older houses up to a modern standard, all managed end to end with itemised quotes and no hidden surprises.

What we renovate

– Whole-home renovations. Reworking the layout and finishes across the home so it actually suits how you live.
– Period and heritage restorations. Bringing terraces, cottages and character homes up to standard while keeping what makes them special.
– Structural renovations. Removing walls, changing levels and opening up dark, closed-in homes.
– Kitchen, bathroom and living reworks. Done as part of a larger renovation, detailed to a high finish.

Renovate, extend or rebuild?

The right move depends on your home and your block:

– Renovate when the bones are good and you want to rework or modernise what’s there.
– Extend when you mainly need more space. See our home extensions page.
– Rebuild when the existing home has had its day and starting fresh is better value. See our knockdown rebuilds page.

We’ll give you an honest read on which suits your place, not just the biggest job.

Our renovation process

– Site check and brief. We look at the home, its condition and council controls, and talk through what you want to change.
– Design and quote. A design that works with the existing home and your budget, then a clear, itemised fixed-price quote, no hidden scaries.
– Approvals. Where the work needs them, we manage the DA or CDC pathway and the consultants.
– Build. Construction managed end to end, planned to keep disruption down.
– Handover. Finished, cleaned up and ready to enjoy.

Why renovate with Black Willow Group

– Character kept, standard lifted. Especially on period homes, we protect what’s worth keeping and quietly modernise the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home renovation cost in Sydney?
It depends on the size, the condition of the existing home and the level of finish. Structural work and heritage homes cost more. We give you a clear, itemised quote after we’ve seen the place.

Do I need council approval to renovate?
Cosmetic work often doesn’t, but structural changes, extensions and heritage properties usually do. We don’t lodge the approvals ourselves, but we’ll point you to a trusted architect, draftsman or designer to sort what’s needed, then we take care of the build.

Can I live in the house during the renovation?
Sometimes, depending on the scope. For a whole-home or structural renovation it’s often easier to move out for part of it, and we plan the staging around you.

Do you renovate heritage and period homes?
Yes. A lot of our work is on terraces, cottages and character homes, keeping what makes them special while bringing them up to a modern standard.

Is it better to renovate or rebuild?
It depends on the home. If the bones are good, renovating is usually the better value. If the house has had its day, a rebuild can make more sense. We’ll give you an honest comparison.

Which areas do you cover?
Sydney’s Northern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs.
